HCASC Returns to the Beach

The Redondo Beach Pier was once again the site of excitement as the HCASC family visited the beach for the second year in a row.  Some of the tried and true activities, along with new games, were played at this year’s gathering. Games included tug-of-war, disc toss, beach volleyball, a cooperation course, an egg relay and a cone dribble. Other participants played cards, volleyball and went head-to-head in a hula hoop challenge. Food for the evening was provided by Dulan’s on Crenshaw.

Spelman Superstar

4-year HCASC player Ariana Benson, a senior at Spelman College,  has been awarded the prestigious 2019 Marshall Scholarship. The Marshall Scholarship is given by the United Kingdom for winners to pursue graduate degrees in almost any academic subject at any university in the UK. Benson is the only HBCU recipient in this year’s class of 48 scholars.  A psychology major and creative writing minor, Ariana will head to the University of London in the fall for a master’s degree in poetry and creative writing. Her full two-year degree will be funded by the scholarship.

Benson, who has a perfect GPA, credits her four years playing HCASC for helping her land the prestigious award. “Part of the reason why HCASC has been such an important part of my college career, especially as it relates to Marshall, is because Marshall emphasizes leadership so much. I actually wrote my entire leadership essay for Marshall, about my HCASC experience and how being the captain of Spelman’s team taught me there was more than just being the best player on the team to being the captain.”

 On the Agenda

Today is the last day to nominate a player for the Ernest C. Jones Sportsperson of the Year award. We’ll also continue with pin trading, which is Dr. Dre’s favorite activity *wink wink, nudge nudge.*

After the Round Robin games, players will go to Movie Night, then have some downtime to hang out with their new Friends for Life. You can see the day’s full schedule here.
